The Russian had the chance to clinch the tie for his nation as Safiullin delivered the first point against Rinderknech earlier. It was a very close match with the first set going to a tiebreak ultimately won by Medvedev 7-5. Humbert enjoys playing in Australia with the surface suiting his game very well.
He came back strong in the 2nd set winning it 7-5 and forcing the decider where he played some brilliant tennis. It was another tiebreak and this time around it was the Frenchman who won it 7-2 for a major upset. Humbert is one of the best tie-break players on the Tour posting impressive numbers since he became pro.
Medvedev was still able to pull Russi through as he and Safiulllin bested the French combination of Roger-Vasselin and Martin in the doubles. In other news, the USA defeated Canada comfortably with Isner and Fritz delivering crucial points against Schnur and Auger-Aliassime. Shapovalov was slated to play Isner but ultimately pulled out before the match.
