Denis Shapovalov is yet to win a title in 2020, but the Canadian seems pleased with his results this season ahead of his opening match at the Sofia Open.
In addition to reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the US Open, Shapovalov also recorded three Top 10 wins and reached a career high of World No.10 in September. The 21-year old is brimming with confidence as he prepares to make a run at the Sofia Open, the last ATP event of the season before the Nitto ATP Finals next week.
“I feel like I have been playing some really good tennis this year," Shapovalov said. "I am really happy with the way the season has went… I think I played really well throughout the season and I am really happy with where my game is.
I feel like I have definitely improved and I feel like my level is with these [top] guys. If I am not able to reach Top 10 again this season, I will definitely try to go for it next season. The important thing is, I feel like my level is there with these guys and I am able to compete with anyone.”
In addition to reaching the US Open quarterfinals, Shapovalov also made a semi-final run in Rome in September. However, the top seed is hoping to end a three-match losing streak as he takes on Radu Albot in his opening match in Sofia.
“Radu is a very tough opponent," admitted Shapovalov. "The draw is very difficult. Every tournament this year has been pretty stacked, so it is definitely not an easy match… I am excited to get going."
