Andy Murray grew jealous of Rafael Nadal and his Mallorca training base as a teenager and called his mother demanding to move to Spain.
Andy Murray has known Rafael Nadal for many years after meeting on the junior circuit and at one point in time, Murray was very jealous of Nadal and his training regimen in Mallorca. He recalled that situation in a recent interview:
"Rafa and I are good friends and we have been since we were young. We've grown up in competition together and hearing about his training set-up in Spain was a pivotal moment for me. He was able to practice so much more than me and hitting with Top 100 players when he was 14/15, I knew instantly I would have to change my set-up in the UK, I called my mum that night and told her I'd made my mind up, I was moving to Spain!"
Ultimately he did move to Barcelona and stayed there for 18 months training on the clay courts of Spain. It did good for his career; he defeated Nadal several times on clay. Their last match was in 2016 in Madrid with Murray winning that one.
