"I can compete with most players on the Tour" - Rafael Jodar feeding off confidence built from challenging best players in the world

Rafael Jodar's rise through the ATP ranks in 2026 has been nothing short of remarkable. After finishing 2025 168th in the world, the Spaniard has since shot up the order to his current position of 14th in the world. His deep runs in big events have proven to himself that he can compete with the best players in the world.

He will need to be at his best when making his debut at the Laver Cup, right after representing his country at the Davis Cup. He is the youngest participant in this year's event in London and has thoroughly earned his spot after a breakthrough year on the ATP rankings. He started to catch the eye of many in the Sunshine swing where he made his Masters 1000 debuts. His title triumph at the Grand Prix Hassan II was a sign of things to come.

He would reach the quarter-final stage of both the Madrid Open and Rome Open. It took a very resilient Jannik Sinner to halt his run in the Spanish capital, but that match showcased the possible future rivalry between the pair. Jodar still has a lot of development left, being only 20-years-old, and he was giving the World No.1 a lot of grief on court.

His quarter-final performance at Roland Garros was only stopped by eventual champion Alexander Zverev. He was debuting in all four major events this year, with a third- and first-round exit at Wimbledon and the US Open, respectively, disappointing results. In between, there were more flashes of brilliance. He reached a second ATP Tour final at the DC Open, prevented from seizing glory by Taylor Fritz before reaching the semi-finals of the Canadian Open, only to be defeated by Brandon Nakashima.

Jodar has been realistic of his ambitions from the start of the year, already exceeding them by miles. He admitted that he must be doing a lot right to be putting himself in this position where he can go toe-to-toe with the best players in the world.

"I see that in my very first year on the ATP circuit, I can compete with most players on the Tour. That means I'm doing a lot of things right," he explained, as reported by Eurosport Spain.

The number of matches he has played has been crucial as he constantly tries to adapt to the ATP Tour while ironing out his tennis in the progress, always seeking progression. "I'm gradually getting into the rhythm of competition, facing very different opponents with completely varied styles."

Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner have risen to the top of the ATP rankings because of their constant motives to improve, working on the fine details that give them that extra boost on court. Jodar is very much aware that he will have to do the same if he is to reach that level.

"If you want to be one of the best players in the world for many years, you have to pay attention to every detail, down to the smallest things, and do everything at a very high level," he stated.

Not everything will go his way, with Jodar very much in the knowledge that there will be bumpy moments in the road. "You have to understand that there will be moments when things don't go the way you want," he commented. "But you have to accept them, overcome them, and keep a positive attitude, while gradually continuing to get better."

Jodar will face off against Cristian Garin before possibly Alejandro Tabilo as well, depending on the scores. The winner in the Chilean capital of Santiago will go through to the Davis Cup Finals. Straight after, the busy Jodar will team up with the likes of Alcaraz and Zverev as Team Europe look to get their Laver Cup title back against Team World, taking place between September 25-27.
