Andy Murray is playing on the ATP Tour thanks to getting wild cards as the British player has a ranking that would see him play qualifiers most of the time.
Wild cards in tennis have always been a controversial issue and many times the way they get handled receives criticism. Many people point out that handing wild cards to players that are ranked outside of the top 100 but are big names is not the way to do it. Most people would like to see young players get them in order to try and prove themselves among the best of the world.
That is why Andy Murray was criticized several times this year for taking numerous wild cards this year as Murray did not have to qualify once for any of the tennis events he played this year. Asked about that, Murray fired back:
"After what I've gone through the last three, four years and what I've achieved for the game beforehand, I don't feel like I need to justify the reasons for why I should get wildcards."
It's a fair point by Murray who is having a semi-successful comeback against all odds which is admirable and respectable. But many point out that at the very least there should be a limit on wild card receptions during a calendar year which would somewhat limit certain players getting all the wild cards.
It's an interesting topic in the tennis world with many having conflicting views but evens operate as companies and companies want profit. The US Open certainly did not regret giving Murray the wild card considering the match he and Tsitsipas plays and all the storylines that came after it.
