Maria Sakkari is currently 5th in the WTA Race to Guadalajara and she is very close to securing a spot at the
WTA Finals.
It's been an amazing year for Maria Sakkari who has been one of the best performing players on the Tour in 2021. The Greek player is currently 5th in the WTA Race to Guadalajara and she is only about 400 points away for mathematically securing a spot in Mexico. She will have an opportunity to do so at the BNP Paribas Masters in Indian Wells and speaking on that she said:
“It would sound crazy and stupid if I said that I’m not motivated because I’m trying to achieve one of the biggest goals of my career for the first time, which is the [WTA] Finals. I’m more motivated than I was the first week of the year. It’s the end of the season. I know that other players are tired. I know that other players don’t have that goal. I know that with a couple of good results, I’m probably going to make it."
Sakkari is aware of the huge opportunity that is presenting and she is very determined to make it. The close race usually puts a lot of pressure on players but Sakkari is adamant she does not feel it:
“It doesn’t put me [under] any stress, it doesn’t make me feel any pressure, but I know that I can [make it] and I see myself over there. So my motivation is pretty high and I’m feeling fresh. I’m making clever decisions with practice and rest and everything in order for me to last until the middle of November."
