The race to become World Number One by year end is one that will fulfil the focus of a number of players including
Carlos Alcaraz and
Daniil Medvedev to conclude 2023, but for the latter he believes it will go to the Spaniard.
Alcaraz spoke after his opener at the China Open in Beijing which saw him take apart Tommy Paul and says that while he is always keeping the dream alive, it is one that is unlikely to happen with the former US Open champion saying he is merely hanging on.
But despite Novak Djokovic currently being the World No.1, Medvedev has semi-ruled him out of the conversation. This is due to Djokovic picking and choosing his tournaments which is something that Alcaraz and Medvedev don't do currently.
This means that in Medvedev's mind, there is only one logical World No.1.
“Everywhere I go I seek to become champion, so the dream of being #1 remains alive. But I know I am very far away & that my fight must be more about trying to finish in the top 2 & staying close to the top to be able to attack it at the beginning of 2024," said Medvedev.
"I don't think Novak will play too many tournaments, so logic indicates that Carlos would have to finish as #1 at the end of the year.”
