Novak Djokovic has many admirers on the tour and Matteo Berrettini is one of them recognizing the greatness of the Serbian in a recent interview.
Matteo Berrettini has faced Djokovic twice this year with the Seribna beating the Italian each time. The first match came in Roland Garros where Berrettini played very good taking a set off of Djokovic. The pair met up a month later in the Wimbledon final where Djokovic once again proved better than the Italian winning yet another Wimbledon title.
Berrettini understands that Djokovic is much better than him which he admitted in a recent interview. He said:
“Novak [Djokovic] is much better than me, he is an absolute champion. He has never done anything against me, other than the fact that I hate him because he always beats me every time we play. Of course, I’m kidding about hate. He is in the history of our sport and he deserves to have all the records he is claiming.”
The defeat in the Wimbledon stung especially for Berrettini whose favourite event growing up was Wimbledon. He dreamed about winning it since being a kid:
“In 2014 I lost in the second round of the Wimbledon junior tournament. When I was leaving the grounds I told myself I wanted to come back here at least one more time in my life.I always had the feeling that something incredible could happen in those fields. However, I never expected to reach the final. Winning Wimbledon has always been my dream ever since I was a child.”
