Tomas Berdych has had extensive
Davis Cup experience playing for the Czech Republic but he does not count himself among the fans of the new format.
Tomas Berdych lifted the Davis Cup trophy twice with his nation and the Czech player has played a lot of matches in the competition over the years. However, he is not a fan of the new format and style of the competition that was changed in 2019 after the ITF struck a 3 billion dollars deal with the Kosmos Tennis Group spearheaded by footballer Gerard Pique.
Speaking at the Royal Albert Hall Champions Tennis event in London, Berdych said:
“I spent so much time with the ITF on this. They asked many
questions, blah blah blah, and then they changed the format this way. I
haven’t heard many players for it. It’s sad that we all gave our time
and opinions to them and they went with this in the end.
Asked about some of the thing he would like to see Berdych added a unique perspective saying:
"If the Davis Cup happened every two years, everyone would be crazy about it. The winners really would be like the World champions because it’s more unique. You can find the dates in the year for the final to be in September (as opposed to in December as it is currently) and then I think more players would sign up. Then it really would be very special."
It's an interesting suggestion but it just proves that many players have different views on the same matter and it's hard making everyone happy.
