Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina crashed out of the San Jose event in round one blaming poor prep for it.
Rybakina has not played since winning Wimbledon and she admitted that many commitments after the triumph left her unable to prepare as well as she would have wanted for the hard court season. Rybakina opened well in the match taking it 6-1 but then completely fell apart after that losing 6-2 6-0 to Daria Kasatkina.
Speaking after the match, she said:
"I was playing well in the first set and then conditions changed a bit and I think physically, I completely lost focus in the end. Of course, it was a tough week after Wimbledon. I had many things to do, I had a lot of travelling. I didn't have enough time to prepare for the hard season."
Asked if she rushed coming back to tennis, Rybakina said that she just wanted to try and do as best as she could:
"I just wanted to come here and try my best because I knew I was coming to a very tough tournament. Here there are so many great players and I knew I could play in the first round with someone in the top 10."
