World number four Elena Rybakina has opened up about the reason behind not taking part in the upcoming China Open. The WTA 1000 event will be organised from September 25 to October 06, and some of the top players will participate to secure the ultimate prize.
Rybakina is currently one of the most highly-rated players who will not be featured in the competition. The current world number four has struggled with fitness concerns throughout the season and was even forced to withdraw from the recently concluded US Open just before the second round against Jessika Ponchet.
Rybakina was recently quoted in a report explaining her decision not to participate in the upcoming mega-event. The 25-year-old stated that she has withdrawn from the China Open and will not feature in the Asian tournaments this season. She went on to reveal that it was the collective decision of her and her team not to take part in the event to ensure that the focus remains on her health.
"Due to an ongoing back injury, I regretfully have to withdraw from the upcoming Asian tournaments. While I’ve been working hard on my recovery, my medical team and I have decided it's best to prioritize my health at this time. This has been a challenging year, and I am grateful for the support from the tournament organizers and all of my fans. My team and I will work on getting me back on the court before the season finale."
It is not clear whether the one-time Grand Slam winner will be able to regain full fitness ahead of the WTA Finals, which will be held for the first time in Saudi Arabia’s city of Riyadh from November 02-09. Overall, Rybakina played 50 matches in 2024, winning 41 times and suffering just nine defeats. She won three WTA titles this season, and her most recent triumph was in Stuttgart back in April, where she defeated Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
