Nick Kygrios has explained the change room scuffle that happened at the Australian Open men’s doubles second-round match with an opponent’s coaching staff.
Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis beat Croatian pairing Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic in straight sets 7-6, 6-3 before the Aussie duo went on to win the Australian Open men’s doubles title.
Known as ‘Special K‘ the Aussie pair had the time of their lives at the 2021 Australian Open with some calling it a circus act. According to many, they took it too far and they had a few incidents.
One of those was a potential fight that lamost broke out in the chaing room. Speaking on it, Kyrgios said:
“‘I was ready to go, he was threatening to hit me, it was pretty
full-on, Thanasi calmed me down. It was absurd, the trainer came up to my face, nose to nose,
screaming at me, Thanasi is the defuser, he’s the ice in our
relationship.”
Kyrgios also expressed satisfaction about winning the event with his best mate Kokkinakis. Since then he has been left out of the Australian Davis Cup team but he has not commented on that.
