Daniil Medvedev has a very distinct style of playing tennis and while very unorthodox the Russian has made it work recently winning the 2021 US Open.
It's been a very good year for Daniil Medvedev who won the 2021 US Open against Novak Djokovic denying him the chance to complete the calendar grand slam. The Russian has received praise for his tennis in general despite having a very distinct style that 'looks wrong' when you watch him play. He admitted as much in a recent Instagram Live he did with fellow grand slam champion Iga Swiatek.
After getting called a 'pretzel' by Swiatek, Medvedev explained:
“It’s going to be one of my many nicknames. When I was young, I was really uncoordinated. So that’s how I was playing; everyone was hitting strong at me, I was doing lobs. And I have nothing much to [counter] it.”
Despite all of that Medvedev was able to persevere developing a distinct style that is very hard to counter when on a high level. Djokovic had no chance in New York while admitteadly playing far from his best. Daniil finsihed off with story with:
“I was not doing amazing technically, but I always wanted to win. So I tried to find the shots that would annoy my opponents, because they were better than me technically, physically better. But I needed to win, so I think that’s how my technique developed.”
