Novak Djokovic cast doubt over his Olympics participation when asked if he would play without fans in attendance.
Novak Djokovic always took immense pride in representing his native Serbia in tennis competitions with the Olympics being the highest of honours. However, Djokovic never won a gold medal for Serbia at the Olympics which is something he always highlighted as a big goal. His lone medal came in 2008 when he won the Bronze medal.
With the Olympics ever closer the world number one was asked about his participation with Djokovic giving a surprising answer. He said:
“I plan on playing in the Olympics, as long as fans are allowed. If not, I’d think twice about participating.”
It's a controversial question in Japan as calls for the cancellation of the whole event are louder than ever. Japan still has issues handling the pandemic and a recent surge in new cases prompted the government to impose strict rules. Japan's national newspaper came out several days ago with an honest request to the countries Prime Minister. It said:
“We ask Prime Minister (Yoshihide) Suga to calmly and objectively assess the situation and decide on the cancellation of the event this summer."
Roger Federer also recently spoke about the Olympics where he wanted clarity in terms of whether they would go ahead or not. For now, it seems they will go ahead but with the recent situation in Japan, it may very well be played without fans.
