The first-time US Open quarterfinalist continued his stellar run, notching an
impressive 6-2 6-3 victory over Guido Pella in his opening match in Rome.
“Guido is definitely not an easy match, especially on this surface,” said Shapovalov after the match. “I’m moving well, I’m struggling with jet lag a little bit, especially with the matches I’ve had, but I’m trying to do everything I can to recover.
Awaiting the Canadian is Spanish qualifier Pedro Martinez, who recorded a 6-3 7-6(3) victory over Sam Querrey on Tuesday.
"I think I played at a high level today," Shapovalov added. "I don’t know much about Pedro, my next opponent, so I’ll get Mikhail [Youzhny] to help me out.”
