John Isner took over two hours to defeat Evgeny Donskoy 7-5 3-6 7-6(5) while Taylor Fritz needed almost three against Marchenko 6-1 6-7(7) 7-5.
A pair of Americans notched victories at the Mifel Open in Los Cabos with both of them needing over two hours and three sets. John Isner took care of Evgeny Donskoy who gave him a lot of resistance which Isner noted afterwards. He said:
“It was a very difficult match, a struggle out there. I knew it was going to be tough. I didn’t have a lot of confidence coming into the match. At 36 I just try to stay in shape and take care of my body. It’s not about time on the practice court, but time in the gym and stretching to feel good. I think I do a good job of that.”
His compatriot Taylor Fritz needed even more on court time to defeat Ilya Marchenko also in three sets. Fritz spent almost three hours and finished at 1:50 am local time. He was rolling early taking the first set with 6-1 after which he lost the 2nd in the tiebreak.
Composing himself on time he was able to overcome Marchenko with a late push in the 3rd set winning with 7-5. As it was very late Fritz could not wait to get off the court and did not offer any comments.
