Jannik Sinner sealed the deal for Italy as they prevailed in the Davis Cup Finals for the second year in a row albeit it means a lot more to him this time.
Sinner ends a season where he is World No.1, won his first two Grand Slam titles, eight overall on the tour and now winning the Davis Cup again. He went last year from the rising star to the king of the sport.
He also showed his class as Italy lifted the trophy singling out Wesley Koolhof who is retiring after this tournament and is still at the top of his game despite ending his career.
“For sure. It’s been an amazing year. I’m very proud of the team. There’s a lot of work behind it. We are very happy to hold this trophy again. It was a very difficult day today because anything can happen," said Sinner post match.
"Just want to say a couple words for Wesley Koolhof because he’s retiring. He had an amazing career. Everyone is asking ahh he’s retiring because he played amazing all year. I wish him the best. He’s a nice man. We’re happy to be back here holding this trophy. It feels like we’re in Italy.”
While Matteo Berrettini who opened up with victory over Botic van de Zandschulp also was elated. Last year, he watched on as his compatriots lifted the title while he was injured and now he gets to revel in that moment.
“I’m just so happy. Obviously last year I was here just to support the team. This year I was able to bring some points to the cause. It doesn’t matter who’s playing, we’re always putting our heart on court.
"Lorenzo, Jannik, everybody is giving their best. That’s the secret to our team. The guys that are back home, Flavio Cobolli, Arnaldi.. they won some really important matches in the earlier stages. It’s a big team. We’re happy for the trophy.”
