"It is something that does not make any kind of sense": Berrettini continues to rubbish girlfriend being seen as distraction

Matteo Berrettini is not a fan of people blaming his relationhip for the lack of results this year calling such suggestions as rather disrepectful.

Matteo Berrettini hasn't been playing very good tennis this year and many blamed his new relationship for the drop in form. Berrettini was spotted with his new girlfriend out and about a lot of time which many assumed is a clear sign that he's not dedicating his time fully to tennis but rather other pursuits.

In a recent interview, Berrettini said that such claims are very disrespectful:

“At this point in life, seeing a relationship as a distraction for a professional athlete seems disrespectful to me. It would be like saying that a journalist writes worse articles because he has a wife and children. It is something that does not make any kind of sense, does it?”

Both Berrettini and his girlfriend suffered abuse on social media because of the relationship and both spoke out against it. It's likely not going to stop but perhaps an improvement on the courts could lessen the amount of it. Either way it's wrong and Berrettini will keep speaking out against it.
