Nick Kyrgios has opened up on what he termed as an "uncomfortable" meeting when he partnered with American great
Serena Williams during a mixed exhibition match.
On his No Boundaries podcast, the Australian discussed how he played with the 23-time Grand Slam champion during a mixed doubles match, a partnership he believed to be awkward as he saw himself as the better player.
"I've been with Serena before," answered Kyrgios when asked if he'd ever played with the American. "I played mixed doubles with her. And it was like the most uncomfortable experience for me because she was trying to do everything, and I was like ‘I’m better than you’.”
The clip from the podcast was later uploaded to Kyrgios's Instagram account. Following the Australian’s bold claim a number of fans took to Kyrgios’ comments section on his Instagram post to quickly disagree, pledging support to Williams.
One user slammed Kyrgios for being disrespectful, as @jarierande234 commented: “That was pretty disrespectful considering how both Venus and Serena have said nice things about you in the past, could have been a bit classier.”
Following the fan’s comment the Australian replied to the criticism, confirming he had nothing but respect for the Williams sisters, describing them as two of the best to ever play the sport.
He replied: “It’s a bit of banter… I have nothing but respect for the William sisters. They are some of the best players to ever wield a racket.”
