Italy's Jannik Sinner hopeful for Djokovic's comeback at Wimbledon

Italy’s young tennis star, Jannik Sinner, has expressed optimism about seeing Serbia’s legendary tennis star, Novak Djokovic, returning to the court for Wimbledon 2023.

The 22-year-old is already regarded as one of the most highly-rated players currently playing men’s tennis in the singles category, along with Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner has recently become the world number one after replacing Djokovic, who lost the top spot after having to withdraw from the French Open following a knee injury just before the start of the quarterfinal against Norway’s Casper Ruud.

Following that injury, the 37-year-old had to undergo surgery, which cast doubts about his possibility of participating in the upcoming Wimbledon and Summer Olympics.

The newly crowned world number was recently quoted in a report in which he expressed optimism about Djokovic's return to the court for the mega-event. According to him, his absence will be a ‘tough loss’ for the competition.

“I hope that Novak comes back as soon as possible,” he said. “Hopefully he can, somehow, play Wimbledon because it would be a tough loss for Wimbledon not having him.”

Djokovic is going through a difficult season where he is yet to play in the final of any event. That streak extended further after his withdrawal from the French Open.

Before the Roland Garros, Djokovic lost in the semifinal of the Australian Open to Sinner with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. He then lost in the round of 32 of the Indian Wells to Italy’s Luca Nardi with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

After that, Djokovic lost in the semifinal of the Monte-Carlo Masters to Norway’s Casper Ruud with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. The former world number one’s next disappointment came in the Rome Open, where he lost in the third round to Alejandro Tabilo with a score of 6-2, 6-3. Djokovic's last appearance before the French Open came in the Geneva Open, where he lost to Tomas Machac with a score of 6-4, 0-6, 6-1.
