Maxime Cressy played in his 3rd final this year in Newport and he looked pretty much beaten but an incredibly fightback earned him the right to lift his maiden trophy.
It's a great season for Cressy who slowly started his breakout last year. He started last year un the French flag as a dual citizen but switched to the US in the meantime and it's paying off on the court. Cressy is fairly close to making his top 30 debut having played in three finals this year.
He lost in Melbourne to Nadal, lost to Fritz in Eastbourne but finally beat Bublik in Newport. Considering he was down 2-6 0-3 it's not hard to understand why he called the win an incredible feeling:
“It’s an incredible feeling to win my first title, I never thought I would win it this way. I played my first ATP tournament here, and it’s always an incredible atmosphere. There were a lot of ups and downs but I’m very proud of myself for fighting through it.”
With the win, Cressy will most likely be a seed at the US Open which was a goal of his:
“That was my first goal, to be seeded at the US Open, so I’m glad it’s already accomplished. It’s incredibly special to see the success coming and that the hard
work is paying off. It’s the most fulfilling feeling and I’m really
looking forward to more.”
