Novak Djokovic is back at the Davis Cup Finals where he will try to lift Serbia towards the trophy that has eluded them in years past.
Djokovic is the best player and crucial player for Serbia and he will need to play some of his best if he wants to lift his nation past many other great tennis nations. Besides Djokovic, there are seasoned and veteran players in the squad as well but neither moves the needle as much as Djokovic. Novak himself is very excited to be back saying:
"It's great to be back. There was no competition last year so the most recent memory is a sad one with the way it ended. But we're motivated, we know there will be a chance. We're good friends off the court, the atmosphere is great and that's the key thing for success."
Asked by Serbian made what hte goal was, Djokovic responded:
"We hope for the best, same as you guys. It's a different format, we have three locations. We'll see how it all goes. We all want to play our best for our country and each other so we will see how we do."
Serbia will play in a group with Austria and Germany with both nations missing their best players in Zverev and Thiem. On that and the group Djokovic said:
"We all want to face the best players but it's not like that. Even without Zverev and Thiem, the teams are strong especially Germany with Struff and Koepfer. We don't underestimate them simply because their best players are not there. We look forward to the competition and there is no room for error. We want to win the group."
They will have to play in front of empty stands due to the lockdown imposed in Austria which is a bummer for Djokovic as Austria has a lot of Serbian expats who would have filled the stands. On that he said:
"It's different without fans and fans would have made a difference. There are a lot of Serbians in Austria but it's not the first time we play in front of empty stands. We will adjust and try to win."
