Jack Draper won't play the Eastbourne International now after reaching the Quarter-Finals of the Queen's Club Championships with a brutal win over Carlos Alcaraz on Thursday afternoon.
Draper missed Wimbledon last year so is making up for lost time it seems during 2024. He decided to enter all of the grass court events leading up to Wimbledon. But he will now drop the third event from his schedule. He was supposed to play Eastbourne after Stuttgart and Queen's.
But now he won't play on the South Coast. This is a move done by a lot of players when they don't know how far they will get in subsequent events and sees players often enter tournaments they are unsure they will play in. Draper won his maiden title at the Stuttgart Open and took that form unlike Katie Boulter who won Nottingham as part of a Brit tandem into Queen's.
He won his first match easily and then added a win over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz to reach the Quarter-Finals in London. Given that Alcaraz is now out, the draw has opened up for him and he will now likely head then straight to Wimbledon the week after. His next opponent is Tommy Paul at Queen's. He is on a seven match winning streak with Taylor Fritz and Kei Nishikori now headlining Eastbourne in his absence. It is a big miss for the tournament though with Draper being counted on from a British point of view and like Boulter was singed up for all tournaments.
But it is often an event more dominated by the WTA side of the draw with the men's event being an ATP 250 tournament and a footnote on the calendar so in reality, it is no shock that he has decided to withdraw and now heads forward at Queen's.
