Jack Draper’s dominant victory sends Taylor Fritz packing at Indian Wells

Jack Draper achieved a dominant victory to eliminate local favourite Taylor Fritz 7-5, 6-4 at Indian Wells. The world No. 14 advances to his first-ever quarterfinal at Tennis Paradise and will now face the last remaining local: Ben Shelton.

The British No. 1 had an extraordinary serving performance and was better in key moments, converting 3 out of 4 break points, while he only ceded one break on his serve, the only opportunity Fritz had towards the end of the match, which only served to embellish an impressive performance by Jack Draper.

First Set

In a balanced contest at the beginning, the British No. 1 kept his composure and stayed close to Fritz, who started strong on his serve. Draper was relentless when landing his first serve, with a perfect 100% success rate (18/18), compared to 75% for the American (15/20).

Everything remained tied until 5-5, when Fritz showed the first signs of hesitation. It only took one break opportunity for Draper to take the lead, and after holding his serve without issue, he secured the first set 7-5. Draper was more aggressive, hitting 13 winners against Fritz’s 11, and he committed 7 unforced errors, compared to 10 from Fritz.

Second Set

Fritz played at a high level for most of the first set, but after the break, he mentally crumbled. Draper seized the momentum and immediately put pressure on his opponent, earning a couple of break point opportunities and taking the lead quickly.

The nightmare worsened for the American when he dropped serve again, and Draper surged ahead to 4-0, a nearly insurmountable lead considering the Brit's serving effectiveness throughout the match. The pressure at the end of the set seemed to affect Draper, who for the first time in the match gave Fritz a break opportunity, which the American capitalized on, keeping hope for a comeback alive.

Although Fritz managed to bring the set to 4-5, Draper held onto his serve and on his first match point, secured his second victory against Fritz and his seventh win over a top-10 player.
