Italy’s young tennis star Jannik Sinner has achieved another milestone after impressive outings this season. The 22-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with the likes of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Sinner is going through a fabulous season despite having a difficult season off late, where he has struggled with fitness concerns. That was visible during the ongoing Canadian Open, where he suffered a defeat in the quarterfinal against Andrey Rublev with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. During the contest, Sinner struggled with an apparent hip injury and was seen as uncomfortable. It was because of the fitness concern that Sinner was forced to withdraw from the recently concluded Paris Olympics as well.
Earlier, he also had to miss the Rome Masters because of a fitness problem and was clearly dejected after missing out on playing in front of the home crowd. Despite that result, Sinner, who became world number one earlier this year during the French Open, has become the first men’s tennis player to qualify for the ATP Tour Finals. The competition will be held in Turin, Italy, which means that the reigning world number one will be playing in front of the home crowd.
Last year, Sinner had a fabulous tournament, but he came just short of lifting the title as he lost to world number two Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic, who ended up winning the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3. He will be hoping to go one step further this year and become the first Italian player ever to lift the title. It was the second consecutive year that Djokovic lifted the title. He won it in 2022 as well, where he defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud in the final in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3.
