Jannik Sinner (No. 1) continues to defend his title at the
Canadian Open after defeating
Alejandro Tabilo (No. 21) 6-4, 6-3. The Italian secured the victory in straight sets and advances to the quarterfinals, which will be played in the night session in Montreal.
It was a match with short points, very few rallies, and where both players were inconsistent with their serves. However, Sinner stood out with his composure in the important moments and secured a significant win without needing to work too hard.
Sinner stays strong in Canadian Open title defense
At the beginning of the match, neither player managed to gain an advantage over the other. Sinner played with just a 46% first serve percentage, and Tabilo wasn’t much better with 56%. Nevertheless, both were effective enough to avoid break points against them during the first half of the set.
With the score at 3-3, the Italian capitalized on the first signs of doubt from the left-hander and secured a break on his second opportunity. Errors proved costly for the Chilean, who then failed to threaten Sinner’s serve, leading to the Italian taking the set 6-4 after 42 minutes.
In the second set, Sinner quickly secured a break, giving him a 3-1 lead within minutes. With the advantage on his side, the World No. 1 didn’t require much effort to continue holding his serve for the rest of the set. The Chilean created opportunities, particularly when Sinner played with his second serve, but it wasn't enough to generate a break in his favour.

It seemed neither player would falter on their serve again, but towards the end of the set, Sinner capitalized on the pressure on his opponent and secured the break to close out the match 6-4, 6-3 after one hour and 21 minutes, guaranteeing his place in the quarterfinals.
There won’t be much time to rest as he will return to the court in the night session to face
Andrey Rublev (No. 8). The rains have caused the suspension of several matches during the week, and the quarterfinals will be completed this afternoon.
