World number
one
Jannik Sinner has stated that he did everything in his power to take part in
the Paris Olympics. The 22-year-old is already regarded as one of the best
players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category along with
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Sinner is
going through a fabulous season butt off late, he has struggled with fitness
concerns. It was for this reason that World Number One ended up deciding
to withdraw from the Paris Olympics. After that decision, Sinner was criticised
on social media by a fan base who blamed the one-time Grand Slam winner
for not putting enough effort to represent his country at the mega-event.
Sinner is
currently playing in the Canadian Open, where he was asked a similar question during
the press talk. The Italian tennis star was unhappy with the question
and stated that people have no idea how much he and his team worked behind the
scenes to participate in the competition. He also revealed that one of his
biggest goals is to win an Olympic medal for his country.
"It's a
question I don't even want to have to answer honestly,” he said. “I think only
my team and I really know how I felt.. from the outside it's one thing, from
the inside it's another. I especially know how I felt. I had said since the
beginning of the year that my biggest goal was the Olympics, but unfortunately
I wasn't even able to get out of bed. Then honestly, what people think... let's
say I give it little importance, little weight.”
Sinner is
taking part in the singles and doubles category of the Canadian Open. In the
singles category, he has booked his place in the round of 16 after beating
Croatia’s Borna Coric in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4. He is now set
to face Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in the last-16 clash on Friday.
