The Italian is fighting hard for a spot at the ATP Finals in Turin and this win brings him closer to that goal. The Italian arrived in the Austrian capital after a brilliant week in Belgium where he lifted the Antwerp European trophy. Today against Opelka he continued the trend of winning taking down the American in two easy sets.
The first set was largely played as one expected. Opelka did his best servebot impression keeping rallies short. Sinner would occasionally find a hole and win a point but for the most part, he was powerless against Opelka's serving. However, he patiently waited and when he got presented with a chance he took it and broke Opelka.
From there it was a rather easy finish to win the opening set with 6-4. The 2nd set was even more impressive from Sinner who had all the answers once Opelka missed his serve. After posting an unbelievable 92% 1st serve hit percentage in the first set he regressed to only 72 % in the 2nd set. That opened a lot of chances for the Italian and he took them.
He first took a 4-2 lead in the set before closing out the match with 6-2. The Italian is confidently marching to a place in Turin but he will need a few more wins to secure a spot there. Game on!
