Italy’s
Jannik Sinner had an incredible run in 2024 when he
became world number one during the French Open after Serbia’s Novak Djokovic
was forced to retire because of an injury just before the start of the quarterfinal
against Norway’s Casper Ruud.
The 23-year-old’s on-court became even better after he won an
exhibition event in Saudi Arabia —
Six Kings Slam. With that, he earned a
whopping prize money worth of £4.6 million. He defeated world number two Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz in the final with a score of 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. Interestingly, the £4.6
million earned by Sinner in Riyadh after winning the Six Kings Slam is half of what
he earned throughout the year where he won seven titles including two Grand
Slams.
Sinner, after beating Alcaraz in the final, spoke highly of
his opponent and stated that he makes him a better player. He was of the
opinion that the four-time Grand Slam winner pushes him hard to improve and believes
that such rivalries is always good for the sport where two players are battling
in every competition to secure the ultimate prize.
“We try to push
ourselves to the limit,” he said. “I wake up in the morning trying to
understand how to beat him. These kinds of rivalries and players always push us
to our 100 per cent limit. I’m very happy about this today. We understand each
other very well. We travel a lot, we are I would say good friends, not
obviously the best of the best. We also like to share every time we go on the
court, we try to enjoy it. Until now every match was very good level-wise. Hopefully
this rivalry will last as long as possible, but there are so many other great
players who can jump in, which is so exciting. Let’s see what is coming in the
future, nobody can tell.”
