Back in action: Jannik Sinner's ranking situation after three months away

Jannik Sinner's suspension, which kept him off the court for three months, ends this Monday, May 5th. The Italian lost a significant number of points during his time away, but remains comfortably at the top of the ranking with a difference of more than 1,500 points from his closest pursuer, Alexander Zverev.

The 23-year-old started the year in the best possible way, winning his third Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, but a couple of weeks later, the bad news began. Sinner accepted a three-month suspension in agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency to close the doping controversy.

Initially, Sinner had been found innocent by the International Tennis Integrity Agency in the doping case, in which he would have accidentally been contaminated with Clostebol due to negligence by his medical team. After avoiding a suspension in 2024, WADA announced an appeal, requesting a suspension of between 1 and 2 years for the player.

While awaiting the Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing, initially scheduled for April of this year, WADA negotiated an agreement with Sinner to limit the suspension to three months and avoid the trial. This was accepted by the Italian and his team, forcing him to stay away from competition for a few months.

During this period, Sinner missed five tournaments scheduled on his calendar, four of them Masters 1000 events, losing a good sum of ranking points. Initially, it seemed likely that the Italian could be displaced from the top, but both Zverev and Alcaraz had some inconsistent results and could not take advantage of the No. 1's absence to take the top spot.
