There has been a lot of mystery surrounding
Jannik Sinner in recent times. Following his Wimbledon triumph, the World No.1 has not been on the court, dealing with a troubling knee injury. This has turned out to be a lot more serious than many expected, with the Italian pulling the plug on his 2026 campaign.
The five-time Grand Slam champion was utterly dominant at times this campaign. Winning five consecutive Masters 1000 campaigns as his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, was hampered with injury problems of his own. While Roland Garros did not go his way, he defeated Alexander Zverev to defend his Wimbledon title.
From that point, he has not been spotted. Skipping the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, he was expected to battle for the US Open title once more. However, there was a lot more concern when he withdrew from the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year.
The China Open and
Shanghai Masters were the latest tournaments to have been canceled on the Sinner schedule, but now it is confirmed that he will not feature for the rest of the season, a massive blow for the 25-year-old whose position at the top of the rankings is up for grabs.
Sinner confirms 2026 layoff
On
Instagram, Sinner announced the news. "Hello everyone, I would like to give you a little update. Me together with the doctors have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over. The last couple of years, especially the ending in Turin, gave me so many beautiful feelings and emotions, which this year is going to be way different, but at the moment I also need to think about my long-term career.
"So I will do everything possible to get back 100%. I will thank you already in advance for your support and hope to see you very very soon on court again."
Sinner will lose a huge amount of points. The title defences in Vienna and Paris are off the cards, along with the ATP Finals. Zverev is now the huge favourite to end the year as World No.1 with there now a huge opportunity for other players to capitalise.
