Vesely's DREAM run to the final: R1: Cilic R2: Bautista Agut QF: Djokovic SF: Shapovalov @jiri_vesely #DDFTennis
Jiri Vesely extended his tremendous week in Dubai by another day by taking down Denis Shapovalov in a very dramatic match.
The Czech player has been playing the best tennis of his career this week in Dubai winning several matches in quite a stellar fashion. None was more impressive than his win over Djokovic yesterday that effectively send Medvedev atop of the ATP Rankings due on Monday. Now, he won another match and this one against Shapovalov was quite dramatic.
It lasted three hours and 16 minutes with all three sets finishing in the tiebreak. The match was a very close one obviously with both players having pretty good chances to win it. Shapovalov was superb in the 2nd set serving exceptionally well. It seemed like it was only a matter of time before the Canadian would finally find a way to win the match in straight sets.
However, when the tiebreak came around Shapovalov completely fell apart and Vesely was able to take it with 7-2. A similar thing happened in the 3rd set where both players had chances to win the match at the end with Shapovalov actually serving for the match. He choked and Vesely broke back and eventually won the match in the tiebreak.
