Cruz Hewitt had an uncomfortable moment with his father, Lleyton Hewitt, during the Wimbledon Juniors campaign. Lleyton, a former world number one, has been heavily involved in training his son to follow in his footsteps. Lleyton has consistently been seen sitting in Cruz’s matches and often gives him advice on how to navigate a particular situation.
Things, however, heated up in Cruz’s second-round contest at the Wimbledon Juniors event. The 16-year-old won the first round against Savva Rybkin in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-2. Cruz’s journey ended in the second round, where he lost to Finland’s Oskari Paldanius in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-0. During the contest, Cruz was furious with his gameplay and ended up having a heated exchange with his father, Lleyton.
Cruz accused Lleyton of ‘acting for the cameras’ at one stage. He snapped later again and was heard saying, “I tried that”. Cruz’s team tried to comfort him, saying that ‘everything is fine’. The 16-year-old, however, was not having any of that and responded by saying, “It’s not fine, it’s nearly 4-0.”
This is the third consecutive Grand Slam in 2025 where Cruz failed to get past the second round in the Juniors event. At the Australian Open, he was knocked out after losing to the Czech Republic’s Jan Kumstat in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6. Later at the French Open, he was knocked out after losing in the first round to Italy’s Pierluigi Basile with a score of 7-6, 5-7, 6-3.
