Tennis legend and now commentator John McEnroe was previously criticised by fans on social media for comments regarding Chile’s Nicolas Jarry. The 28-year-old is currently participating in the Rome Open, where he booked his place in the final after beating America’s Tommy Paul with a score of 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
Talking after the match, Jarry expressed delight about his performance. “I was pleased with how I came back with my aggressive tennis in the third set,” he said. "To finish the match is never easy, but I made it through and it’s an amazing feeling. It’s in those moments that I play my best tennis. That’s when I got for it and if it goes in, amazing, if it doesn’t then you give it up. I try to be like that throughout the whole match. It’s difficult to maintain that level constantly, but I’m in the final.”
Before the start of the match, McEnroe passed the comment when he faced Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon, "We don’t know Jarry, but we’ll get to know him.” Those words did not go well with the fans who criticised the former world number one for not knowing the current world number 28. "It’s amazing, it’s disrespectful, and it shows McEnroe does not do his job. Anyone can go on YouTube and watch vids, learn Jarry's game, and come prepared to commentate,” one user wrote on social media platform X — previously known as Twitter.
Now McEnroe has egg on his face for these comments as Jarry continues to prove the legendary American and also the rest of the tennis world wrong with superb display after display at the Rome Open. He faces Alexander Zverev tomorrow in the final. He also will make his top 15 debut in winning the title on Sunday, another accolade for the Chilean.
