The Citi Open in Washington offered some good tennis last night but also quite a bit of drama that we usually don't see at events of the highest levels.

Tennis is a sport allergic to drama and governing bodies desperately try to keep all the drama that happens on the courts to a minimum with harsh fines and strict rules. However, sometimes it's not enough as it was last night in a match between Thompson and Ymer.

At 1-1 in sets and 3-5, Thompson served to stay in the match. The score was tied 40-40 when Thompson played a dropped shot. Ymer was able to get to it and play it over with Thompson thinking it bounced twice. He casually hit a backhand that ended up in the net and the umpire gave the point to Ymer.

Thompson was very angry as he thought the ball bounced twice and he shouted to Ymer “are you gonna take that?”. The Swede replied with “I didn’t see it" after which the umpire said: "it's my call, I didn’t see it”. Thompson went over to Ymer to confront him and they squared a bit before the ref jumped in to separate them at the last minute.

Microphones picked up Ymer saying to the umpire to call the police but the umpire was able to deescalate the situation before the match finished with Ymer winning the final set with 6-3. Thompson refused to hold a press conference afterwards.
