Jordan Thompson suffers massive blow ahead of Australian Open after retiring from Brisbane International quarterfinals

Australia’s Jordan Thompson has suffered a major blow ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year after being forced to retire from the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International. The 30-year-old was expected to be one of the home crowd’s favourites in the upcoming Australian Open 2025.

The first Grand Slam of the next year will begin on January 12, and players from all over the world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize. Thompson, who would have been in the running to produce the goods in front of the home crowd in Melbourne, suffered a serious injury scare as he was forced to retire from the quarterfinal of the Brisbane International against Grigor Dimitrov.

The final score of the contest was 6-1, 6-2. Dimitrov, after the match, wished his opponent the best of luck in the future events and expressed optimism that he will be ready to play in the Australian Open. "It's very unfortunate for him, I hope he's ready for the Aussie Open," said Dimitrov. "From the beginning I felt like I was in control ... all those things, they're giving me a lot of confidence."

Thompson does not have a great record while playing at the Australian Open, where, despite playing in the main round 11 times, he has never managed to qualify for the third round or beyond. In the 2024 edition, he was knocked out after losing in the second round to Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas with a score of 4-6, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6. Thompson came into the Brisbane International on the back of an impressive 2024 season, where he won 35 out of 58 matches and suffered just 23 defeats. He also won an ATP 250 title last year in Mexico — Los Cabos Open — after beating Norway’s Casper Ruud in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6.
