The Special K's, a fan nickname for the team of Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis, fought from a set down to advance in the men's doubles event at the 2022 US Open.
The Aussie duo pulled off a 4-6 6-3 6-4 win over the team of Hugo Gaston and Lorenzo Musetti, relying on their big serves to bail out of trouble. Despite their clash in the first round of the singles event, there was no bad blood as both men exhibited great teamwork. Kyrgios was especially sharp at the net, displaying insane reflexes and anticipation as he carried the team when his partner was not quite as confident.
After dropping a close first set, the 2022 Australian Open doubles champions increased their intensity. Kyrgios was highly instrumental and vocal, encouraging his teammate and doing his best to fight off the splendid teamwork from their opponents. His persistence paid off, as they finally capitalized on one of several break points to win the second set.
With the score tied, the final set saw Kyrgios' passion and volatility emerge as the Wimbledon runner-up smashed his racket in anger after losing a point. Nonetheless, the former World No.13 was able to control his emotions, and with some encouragement and inspired play from Kokkinakis, obtain the crucial break. This led to them serving out the match, advancing to the second round after two hours of play.
