Nick Kyrgios complicated things for himself quite a bit but he was able to win the match against Djere 5-7 7-6(1) 7-6(2).
This match followed a very familiar script when it comes to grass match that Nick Kyrgios plays in. The Aussie player largerly dominated on his own serve keeping the points short. On return, he applied very strong early pressure on Djere but was unable to find a breakthrough. It would prove very costly towards the end of the set when Kyrgios complicated matters a lot.
Down 5-6 he had a 40-15 lead but rushed a bit too much giving Djere a break point which the Serbian converted. A very aggravating result for Kyrgios but he composed himself on time to start the 2nd set well. Neither player allowed much and we arrived in the tiebreak without a single break point. In the tiebreak, Kyrgios jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and cruised to 7-1 from there.
He faced early issues in that one facing a 0-40 in the first game. He was able to hold and celebrated it considerably showing he truly cared about the win. Wind started making things tricky for the players and Kyrgios had to save a couple of more break points in the next game. Eventually, both settled in a nice rhythm and we saw another tiebreak.
Djere threw it really with a double fault to give Kyrgios a 2-0 lead and then a backhand wide for 0-3. From there it was an easy job for Kyrgios to cruise to the 2nd round with 7-1 in the final set tiebreak.
