Leylah Fernandez has been working hard towards a proper comeback and slowly but surely she's starting to get back to winning ways as she opened her Dubai campaign with a solid win.
The Canadian has struggled to return to peak tennis following her injury last year but she's slowly getting there. A few wins in Abu Dhabi and Doha seemed to have increased her confidence which was on display today. She faced Julia Grabher in the first round, a solid player who can play well but generally struggles against some of the best.
It was a confident straight-set win with the opening et finishing 6-4 in her favour. She was up 4-2 but then lost two games in a row to make it 4-4. A bit of nerves showed but she handled it well and finished it off 6-4. The second set was more confident from her as she relaxed a bit which allowed her to smash the ball really well.
She took a 4-0 lead and then held it to finish it off 6-2. Fans are hoping she can finally win a few matches in a row to get some proper rhythm as opposed to winning one and then losing the next one. The opponent is a very tough one as she will play Iga Swiatek in the second round of the event.
