Iga Swiatek broke a record with her emphatic win over Jessica Pegula at the
Qatar Open and she apologized to
Chris Evert who held it before her.
Swiatek became the player with the fewest games lost at an event that she lost and she was a bit lucky to get it. She played three matches as opposed to the usual 4 because Bencic gave her a walkover by pulling out before their match. The rest of the record-breaking was her doing as she lost only 5 games in those three matches to get it done.
The previous record was held by Evert, Graff and Seles who all lost 8 games en route to a trophy. Speaking after the match, Swiatek commented on it:
"Well, a lot, but on the other hand, when I was playing, I didn't really think about that (smiling). So it's not like I wanted to achieve that, but for sure it shows that I used my chances, all my chances that I had during this tournament to put pressure on my opponents and to break them."
She added:
"So I'm just happy that I was so efficient. And, sorry, Chris. Yeah, well, it's also, you know, because basically I had a bye, and Belinda pulled out, so I had little bit easier situation to do it, but I'm still proud of it, so I'm happy."
