A couple of young players went head to head in the Hamburg quarterfinals and it was Lorenzo Musetti who proved better 6-4 6-3.
The Italian is playing his best event in a very long time and it continued today against Davidovich Fokina who can be very up and down. The Spaniard was not superb today but he was pretty decent with Musetti simply being better. The first set was a good one as it opened with both in a nice rhythm. Midway through the set, we saw three consecutive breaks of serve.
At the end of it, Musetti emerged with a 5-3 lead that resulted in a 6-4 opening set finish. Fokina served poorly in this set and it cost him considerably. He was quite poor on his 2nd serve overall winning less than 50 % points and that gave too many chances to Musetti who took advantage of them.
The 2nd set was even better from Musetit who took an early break and then added another one later on for the 4-1 lead. Fokina was able to pull one break back but he lost his serve once more in the final game of the match losing the set 3-6. Just not good enough from Fokina who was too erratic against a very steady Musetti who moves on to the semifinal.
