Maria Sakkari stormed past Qinwen Zheng 6-1 6-4 in Melbourne to book a spot in the 3rd round of the
Australian Open.
Sakkari enjoyed quite a bit of fan support from the rather large Greek community in Melbourne and the Greek used it to her advantage. She played superb tennis from the start of the match to move on rather quickly. Sakkari served well and played well from the baseline limiting errors which are always important for Sakkari.
That resulted in a rather quick demolition in the first set as Zheng simply could not keep up. The Chinese player tried a variety of things but ultimately settled on blasting away from the baseline in order to counter Sakkari but that was a bad idea.
The Greek player produced a more consistent effort and limited the errors in a better way which proved good enough. The start of the 2nd set featured a similar trend with Sakkari once again jumping out on the front with an early 3-0 lead.
After that, it was a rather straightforward finish for Sakkari who tried to finish it off earlier but the Chinese player fought hard to give herself a chance. Her patient approach worked as she was able to break Sakkari in the game the Greek served for the match. However, she lost her serve once more allowing Sakkari to finish it off with 6-4.
