The Italian
duo of Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego outshine Novak Djokovic and Miomir
Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4, securing their spot in the Davis Cup final.
Similar to
the previous tie, the Italians took to the court with Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo
Sonego facing the Serbs Novak Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic. In the day's
first match, the Serbian No. 2 had overcome Lorenzo Musetti, leaving everything
on 'Nole,' who couldn't overcome an impressive Sinner, leveling the series at
1-1.
All players
held their serves at the start of the match, but the first break came in the
sixth game, where Italy took a 4-2 lead, and then, with a confirmed service,
secured the advantage, ultimately winning the set 6-3. Only one break point was
played in the set, which proved sufficient for Sinner and Sonego to take the
lead.
The Italian
duo showcased their strength from the service, winning 77% with the first serve
and 70% with the second, while the Serbs only managed 57% with the first serve
and 67% with the second.
In the
second set, the Italians didn't let up and secured another break in the third
game, seemingly an advantage that sealed the match for the Serbs. However,
Djokovic and Kecmanovic quickly recovered the break to level at 2-2. In the
sixth game, the Serbs had four break opportunities, but they couldn't
capitalize.
The Italian
reaction came in the seventh game, with the decisive break in their favor,
which they only had to defend from their own service games. Sinner and Sonego
achieved the feat by defeating the Serbs 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the Davis Cup
final and will face the Australian team.
The Oceania
team is led by the world No. 12 Alex de Minaur and world No. 40 Alexei Popyrin.
Additionally, the doubles players for the team are Matthew Ebden and Max
Purcell. The Australians defeated Canada in the quarterfinals and had no issues
against the tournament's surprise, Finland.
