Matteo Berrettini had to work pretty hard to take down Andy Murray and he was able to do it in four sets 6-4 6-4 6-7(1) 6-3.
It was a very interesting matchup and it proved a very interesting match. Both players opened well with Murray having to face an early break point. He saved it but failed to do the same a couple of games later double-faulting on break point.
Berrettini took the first 6-4 but found himself losing an early break at the start of the second set. Murray found encouragement after that by playing some solid tennis and keeping Berrettini away from break points. He failed to create much pressure on return as well and faltered towards the end to lose it 4-6 again.
The 3rd set was a roller coaster for Murray who had to save break points in pretty much every game he served. He was able to do so and drag himself to a tiebreak where he took advantage of some terrible errors by Berrettini. It was 7-1 and we moved to the fourth set.
The Italian wasted 8 break points in the 3rd set but needed only two in the next set to get the break. It came at the perfect time, at 4-3, to make it 5-3 and then close it out with 6-3. Murray had break points in the game before losing his serve and he'll think long about that missed chance.
