Matteo Berrettini missed the entire clay season due to a wrist injury but the Italian returned to tennis today with a strong victory 6-2 4-6 6-3.
It happened in Stuttgart at the BOSS OPEN with Radu Albot the victim. Berrettini had a great grass season last year lifting one trophy and reaching the Wimbledon final. Returning today he looked as sharp as ever completely smashing his opponent in the opening set. We saw 7 aces from Berrettini who dropped only one 1st serve point the entire set.
He also broke his opponent twice in that opening set for the 6-2 finish. In the 2nd set, Berrettini had plenty of chances to finish off the match but never quite getting over the finish line. He squandered 3 break points while losing his serve the first time he faced a break point in the 2nd set to give Albot a 5-3 lead. The Moldovan won the 2nd set with 6-4 forcing a 3rd.
At the start of the 3rd Berrettini had to wiggle his way out of a tricky situation saving three break points in the process. After that, he finally found his stroke again breaking Albot and taking a 4-1 lead. He finished off the match with 6-3 behind 21 aces.
