Maxime Cressy won his maiden trophy on home soil in Newport beating Alexander Bublik in three sets with a comeback from 2-6 0-3 to 2-6 6-3 7-6(3).
Bublik played in the Newport final last year as well but lost to John Isner in straight sets. One year later he found himself in another final against another American. With each performance, Bublik grew more confident and comfortable and it showed in the final early.
Cressy did not know what to do once his plan A failed and Bublik just kept applying pressure and having fun on the court. Bublik won the opening one 6-2 and led 3-0 in the 2nd one having a bit too much fun in the 2nd set. Up 3-0, Bublik seemed fairly close to winning the match but he threw it away, quite literally with his typical shenanigans.
After breaking back to make it 3-2 and then 3-3 Cressy completely turned the match upside down with a 3-0 run to finish off the 2nd set with 6-3. Bublik lost six games in a row the way only he knows how and it complicated things for him a lot. Cressy was pumped and he played like it in the final set. He was better early but failed to use those chances.
Bublik settled in a nice rhytm later on forcing the tiebreak and it was a strange one. Both players did not serve as well with the returners being better. In the end, Cressy was better overall taking it 7-3 to win his maiden one.
