Patrick McEnroe believes Novak Djokovic is the best player right now picking him to win the Australian Open if it started tomorrow.
Djokovic has been king down under for a very long time having won the event a couple of times in a row. We say 'in a row' because he didn't play last year with many adamant that he would have won it had he played. Considering how he played this year when he did play, it's not far-fetched at all.
Patrick McEnroe had a chance to watch him in London at the Laver Cup and he was very impressed. He was also impressed by Rune who bested Djokovic in his final match as he explained his views on the match:
"This guy (Holger Rune) is a phenomenal athlete, amazing legs, incredible shot selection, just overall an electric player to watch. But I don't see him beating Djokovic in best-of-5 in Australia. Of course, he can do some work in the next few months, which I expect he'll do. But the point is, if the Australian Open started next week, to me Djokovic is the solid favourite."
He added:
"It's been proven over the last few years, especially that it's a lot harder to beat Rafa and Novak in best-of-5 if they're healthy and ready to go. We've seen them get picked off in these events and more so in the last 3-5 years, by Tsitsipas' and Zverevs. But to do it in best-of-5? That's why for Rune, he's going to have to put in a little bit more work physically."
