Daniil Medvedev's status at the
Australian Open was in doubt for a brief time after fellow Russian was barred entry into the country despite being vaccinated.
Natalia Vikhlyantseva announced yesterday that she won't be taking part in the 2022 Australian Open despite being vaccinated. The Russian explained that the vaccine she took (Sputnik V) is not verified by the WHO and therefore not accepted by the Australian Open. Sputnik V is widely used in Russia as the primary vaccine but it has not been verified yet by the World Health Organization.
Fans of other Russian tennis players including Medvedev got worried over the status of those players considering that neither of them including Medvedev disclosed what vaccine they took. A few months ago Medvedev explained the reason why he would not disclose his vaccination status publicly:
"I want to keep my medical, no matter if it's about the vaccine, leg injury, head injury. I want to keep my medical private for a reason."
That got fans worried for a moment but the Russian Tennis Federation quickly calmed down everybody when the president publicly said:
"Our tennis players will not have any problems with admission to the Australian Open. And all the leading athletes who played for the national teams in the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup have already been vaccinated.”
So there you have it, Medvedev will play at the Australian Open.
