Daniil Medvedev needed 5 sets and well over three hours to crack the Marin Cilic code but the Russian was able to do it 6-7(4) 3-6 6-3 6-3 6-2.
Marin Cilic turned back the clock in the 3rd round of Wimbledon against Daniil Medvedev as the Croatian played great tennis early on which gave him the 2-0 lead. He played great tennis in the first set breaking Medvedev to take a 4-2 lead before giving it back.
He would still win the set in the tiebreak taking it 7-4. Medvedev did not play bad but Cilic was simply stunning especially on serve. Cilic continued playing well in the 2nd set winning it with 6-3 as Medvedev completely faltered in that set playing some of the worst tennis he played at Wimbledon this year.
He got lucky in the 3rd as Cilic came out very erratic in the 3rd set. He was all over the place with his tennis committing 20 unforced errors in the set which was too much to overcome. Medvedev won the set with 6-3 thanks to finally some good play which came on time.
Cilic could not handle the improved level of Medvedev and he was still off committing 15 errors which was enough for Daniil to take advantage of. He won it with 6-3 and continued dominating early in the 5th taking a 4-0 lead.
Medvedev would go on to complete the majestic comeback winning the 5th set with 6-2. He moves on to the 2nd week and he will cherish the break as this match went on longer than he would have liked.
