Daniil Medvedev defeated Canadian Vasek Pospisil in his
Australian Open opener extending his winning streak to 15 and after the match, he was happy it ended quickly.
The Russian has been on a tear that started last season and it has continued in 2021 so far. He won all his matches at the ATP Cup and also won his Australian Open opener against Pospisil where he dropped only 8 games. After the match he was glad it was over quickly:
“Happy that I managed to finish it fast. Feeling good, let’s see how I go after.”
His relief comes after playing several tough matches in the span of several days which made him question his fitness as he wasn't sure how his body would respond so early in the season:
“Yeah, to be honest, it’s good in a way we didn’t lose a match [in ATP Cup] but on the other side we finished on Sunday – a lot of tough matches against top-10 opponents – so I didn’t know how I was going to feel physically."
It was a strong display from Medvedev who was asked about quarantine and how that affected him personally:
“When you don’t play for three weeks it’s tough to show your best tennis so I was lucky in this way, but I knew I had to go out here and win this match because that’s my job.”
And he did it superbly and will need to do it again against Roberto Carballes Baena whom he will face in the next round. Follow that match and all other matches on
